Peroneal Tendonitis

Peroneal Tendonitis

What is it?

Peroneal tendonitis is defined as an inflammation of the peroneal tendon(s) that run behind the outer ankle bone. Causes may include an increase in intensity/duration of activity, tightness of calf muscles, an ankle sprain, and high arches.

What can you do?

Initially, use the RICE method (relative rest, ice, compression, and elevation). Training modification is also necessary (reduction of training time, use of decreased weight- bearing activities, including cycling, swimming, elliptical machine). Stretching and strengthening of the calf muscles and use of appropriate footwear are also important.
