Meet Darren D.

What was your first CARA volunteer experience?

My first volunteer experience with CARA was as a group leader in 2011. I had received such great support from group leaders in previous years, I knew I wanted to give back for all that was provided for me. When a couple of my long time group leaders decided it was time for them to take a break, I was happy to step into the role. The same was true when our Site Coordinator of 12 years felt it was time for him to "retire". I was thrilled to have the opportunity to provide support, encouragement and knowledge to our Sunday runners.

How long have you been in your current volunteer role?

I have been the site coordinator for Sunday Marathon Training since the Summer of 2014.

What is the best part of your role?

I love sharing my love of running and the running community. It makes me happy to see our runners form friendships and begin relationships. I know how much training and running changes people's lives and it is a privilege for me to be a part of their journeys.

What would you tell individuals considering volunteering for CARA?

CARA is all of us. What makes it so special is the generosity that is evident everyday among our community of runners. Volunteering with CARA is a way to foster that spirit and camaraderie. Being a part of someone's transformative experience (like running a marathon) is very rewarding and alivening. I recommend it to anyone.
