Meet Shayna

How long have you been running?

I initially ran in high school on the Track and Cross Country team for 4 years.  I didn’t appreciate the sport until a few years of taking a break and resuming after college.  I moved to the city and started running along the lakefront path and discovered a new love for running that I thought I never had before.  I haven’t stopped running since which is now almost 7 years! I’ve completed half and full marathons in the last 4-5 years!

How long have you been a CARA member?

 Since 2012

How did you first hear about CARA?

I wanted to become a better runner so I started researching running groups in Chicago. I stumbled upon CARA and the rest is history!

You are running the Chicago Marathon on October 8th - will this be your first? No, this is my 4th time training for Chicago with CARA and 3rd time running the Chicago Marathon!

How many marathons have you completed? What is it about marathons that keeps you coming back for more?

I’ve completed 2 Chicago Marathons in 2014 and 2015. I keep coming back because I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment when I cross the finish line. I’ve gained more confidence in myself from training and running marathons that I can’t stop and won’t stop running them!!  Marathon training is difficult but extremely rewarding!  Last summer, during marathon training, I developed a stress fracture in my tibia and had to back out of the Chicago Marathon. I was completely devastated. I can't imagine my life without being able to run, running is part of me! This year, crossing the Chicago Marathon finish line means much more to me than it has before!!

Why/how did you become involved in CARA's ambassador program?

I truly appreciate what CARA has taught me as a runner.  Through CARA I have learned to never give up and to always keep on trying. CARA has given me the resources (speed workouts & group runs) to help achieve my running goals. I want to support CARA in a way that I can share my experiences with others through the Ambassador program.  It would be an honor for me to promote CARA as way to connect runners in the running community.

What are your favorite types of volunteer events?

Race Expos! I enjoy seeing everyone come together and support the running community! I also love seeing fellow runners get ready for race day and pick up their bibs.
