Live Grit Lakefront 10 Miler and 5K

The Live Grit Lakefront 10 Miler and 5K is the perfect start to any runner's spring season! As one of Chicago's classic distance road races the 10-miler is the kick-off for the 2016 CARA Runners' Choice Circuit.

DATE:  March 19th, 2016

START TIME:  Both the 10-Miler and 5K will begin at 9:00 a.m. together. Runners must start by 9:10 a.m. and finish by 12:00 p.m. to be timed and included in the results.

LOCATION:  Montrose Beach.  The start and finish lines are located at the corner of Montrose Avenue and Simonds Drive.

DISTANCE(S):  10 Miles and 5K (The 5K is new for 2016!)

FASTEST JACK AND JILL UP THE HILL! 

  • Exciting new competition to see who can run up Cricket Hill the quickest.  The fastest male ("Jack") and female ("Jill") up the hill wins! We will keep the splits and whether you're in first or last in the race, if you run the hill quickest, you win!

PACKET PICK-UP:  Please pick up your race packet prior to race day at one of the packet pickup locations. We are not offering packet pickup at the CARA office so you must get it at one of the specified times/locations below.  

Please note, friends or family may pick up your packet. Please have them bring a copy of your confirmation receipt OR copy of drivers license for verification (picture on mobile device is fine).

Live Grit

Participants may pick up their packets at 7:30 a.m. on race day. Packet pickup lines may be long. Please plan to arrive early if you choose to pick up your packet on race day.Packets may not be picked up after 8:45 a.m. (no exceptions).

 

GEAR CHECK: Gear Check will be provided for all runners and will be open from 7:30 a.m. until Noon. You may check a bag of your choice using the gear check tag received at packet pick-up. Please note the gear check area is not covered. In the event of inclement weather, you may wish to choose a plastic or weather-proof bag. The event is not responsible for lost or damaged items checked at gear check. Please do not check valuables.

NOTICE:  For the safety of all runners, participants are NOT allowed to participate with baby joggers, strollers or animals.

DIRECTIONS / PARKING:

  • Public transportation and carpooling is encouraged. 
  • Public Transit: The following bus lines will get you near the start; 78-Montrose, 81-Lawrence, 145-Wilson/Michigan, and 146-Marine/Michigan. Be sure to check the bus schedule with your desired departure time. The 145 and 146 routes start running later on the weekends. You may also take the Red-Line Train to Wilson and head east about one mile to the start.
  • By Bike: Bike racks are available near the start/finish line for participants who choose to ride to the race.
  • By Car: Public parking is available on a limited basis at the event location. Parking is available in the Chicago Park District lots at Foster Avenues. Parking is NOT available at the Wilson lot (Construction) or Montrose lot (boat storage). Free street parking is available within the park.  See map below (green areas are available for parking, red areas are closed).

  • Please arrive early and be prepared to walk from parking areas within the park. Please note, Montrose Avenue will close at approximately 8:20 a.m. in preparation for the race. The race starts and finishes at Montrose Avenue and Simonds Drive.

PROCEEDS: Proceeds from the Live Grit Lakefront 10 Miler and 5K support CARA programming, including CARA Road Scholars, a youth running program designed to challenge students to experience the benefits of goal-setting and improved health by providing them the training and mentorship to complete a half marathon. 10 MILER AWARDS:

OVERALL:  Top three male and female finishers overall will receive awards and prize money.  A cash bonus will be paid to any of the top three overall finishers that are current CARA members. Prize money will be awarded as follows:

  • 1st Place:  $350 ($50 CARA Member Bonus)
  • 2nd Place:  $250 ($50 CARA Member Bonus)
  • 3rd Place:  $150 ($50 CARA Member Bonus)

AGE GROUPS:  Top three male and female runners in the following age groups will be awarded: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 and over.

CLYDESDALE / ATHENA:  Top three male and female Clydesdale / Athena finishers overall will be awarded. See awards detail for more requirements.

CLUB:  The top three male and female club teams will receive awards. The top club overall (male / female combined) will receive awards.  Club teams must be USATF or RRCA recognized clubs to be eligible. 

FASTEST JACK AND JILL UP THE HILL:  A special "prize pail" will be presented to the male and female who run up the final pass of Cricket Hill the fastest.  Splits will be kept and no matter your place or finish time, whoever sprints up the Cricket Hill portion of the course quickest wins! Runners must finish the race to be eligible for this award.

5K AWARDS:

OVERALL:  Top three male and female finishers overall will be awarded.

COURSE:  The 10-mile and 5K courses share the same start and finish lines. The course begins on the road before moving to the Lakefront Path. The 10 Mile course includes two grass sections as runners traverse over Lincoln Park’s signature Cricket Hill at the 2.5 and 9.25 mile marks.  Throughout the course runners will enjoy breathtaking views of the lake shore, along with those of Montrose, Belmont, and Diversey Harbors. USATF Certified Courses:  5K = IL16001WR / 10 Mile = IL16002WR.

MILE MARKERS:  Mile markers will be posted and splits will be given at each mile.

AID STATIONS:  Water and Gatorade will be available at the start, finish and at five aid stations along the course. Aid Stations will be located at approximately 1.5 miles (5K and 10-Miler), 3.25 miles (10 Miler Only), 4.75 miles (10 Miler Only), 6.75 miles (10 Miler Only) and 8.75 miles (10 Miler Only). Medical support and portable toilets will be located at the start, finish and at 10 Miler race aid stations located at 3.25 miles, 4.75 miles, 6.75 miles and 8.75 miles.

COURSE MAP:

Zoom and scroll to see entire course map.  The 10 Miler follows the route marked in blue for the entire race. 5K runners will follow the same route as the 10-Mile course until the red marked route begins. 5K runners will follow the red route from that point until just prior to the finish where they will re-enter the route marked in blue to the finish.
