Hear From Amazing CARA Volunteers

CARA volunteers add an inspirational touch to every program and event! Hear why volunteers love what they do!

CARA member Rich Clancy is an avid CARA Volunteer. We took a moment to discuss why he loves volunteering and what it means to him.

Q1) How did you first start volunteering with CARA?

I first started volunteering with CARA a few years ago at the Lakefront 10 Miler and I was hooked.  I was a Course Marshall near Cricket Hill at Montrose Harbor and spent a beautiful morning directing runners. I soon found myself cheering for all the runners. It was inspiring to know that you needed to be there for the lead runners just as much as the final runners.

Q2) What surprised you the most about your volunteering experience?

I am always impressed with how grateful and encouraging runners are especially to the volunteers.  You can’t help but smile with the constant stream of “thank-yous” from all the passing runners.  I am convinced running brings out the best in people.

Q3) Why do you think it’s important to volunteer in your own community?

For me, running is all about the community, a feeling that I was struggling to find until getting active with running. It embraces all - fast or slow, the driven, the social, the socially driven, and anything inbetween. I am so grateful to be part of this community.

Q4) What has been your favorite volunteering experience?

Every year I look forward to October simply because of the Chicago marathon. For the past 10 years, I have been honored to be part of the volunteer elite team offering hospitality to elite runners from all over the world. At the start I am in awe of the mass of humanity! And the energy is amazing.

Q5) Where else do you think it’s important for the running community to give back?

The running community is generous and runners raise so much money for many important causes. The past few years I’ve been volunteering for Imerman Angels, which provides one-on-one cancer support, offering free personalized connections for cancer fighters, survivors, and their caregivers.  It’s all about connecting people in meaningful ways!
