FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
CHICAGO – The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) is deeply troubled by a recent incident involving one of our members and federal agents. While attempting to arrive home following a training run, the runner was forcibly pulled from their car by federal agents, sustaining multiple injuries requiring medical attention, before being detained for several hours and later released.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated event. Members of our running community have increasingly been affected by immigration-related raids and enforcement actions, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty across Chicagoland. These actions impact runners, families, and neighbors regardless of immigration status, race, or background.
We recognize that many communities of color have long experienced these fears, often without acknowledgment. Today, we speak out in support of all who have been affected, past and present, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every runner feels safe, seen, and valued. In moments where our fundamental purpose is tested, our mission and values remind us why we run together.
CARA stands in solidarity with this member and with all members of our community who are suffering as a result of these actions. We are deeply disturbed by the use of excessive force and tactics that threaten the safety and dignity of our neighbors. Violence against any individual does not make communities safer.
As an organization, CARA remains steadfast in our mission to build an inclusive running community where everyone is welcome. We remain committed to fostering a running community that is inclusive of all people, honors diverse experiences, and leads with empathy and respect. We believe running should unite people, not divide them, and we are committed to providing safe, supportive, and accessible opportunities for all.
We thank our members for the continued care, communication, and compassion during these times. Your efforts are not in vain and will create a much stronger community in the future.
For resources on your rights and how to protect yourself and your loved ones, please visit the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights or CARA’s website under “Resources” where we have posted a Know Your Rights page.
CARA is Chicago's preeminent running community, providing accessible opportunities for all runners to learn, be social, volunteer, train and race.
We are a non-profit organization committed to serving and advocating for the running community.
