Angelica Guerrero - Circuit Spotlight

Angelica Guerrero has been a staple on the Chicago Racing Circuit by CARA for well over a decade now. Each year you can typically find her at races, racking up age group wins and Circuit points. Last year alone she was the Runner of the Year in both the Veteran (50+) Female and Senior (60+) Female age group categories. Additionally, back in 2016 she was inducted into the CARA Hall of Fame. We recently caught up with Angelica to ask about her running journey and advice she has for other fellow runners.Â
Q: Tell us about your running journey! How did you start running?
A: I started running very casually in 2005 when I was 43 years old. I would run around the park near my house and eventually I started to sign up for races. My first race was the 2005 Shamrock Shuffle. Then in 2006, I started attending the Fleet Feet fun runs and was running more consistently from 2 to 3 times per week. Eventually in 2008, I joined the Fleet Feet racing team.Â
Q: How long have you been involved in the Chicago Racing Circuit?
A: In 2011, I started participating in the CARA Circuit (Chicago Racing Circuit). I made it my goal to participate in several Circuit races. These races provided a purpose to train and do my best while racing. Little by little my running community grew. I befriended runners from the suburbs and other runners who participated in the CARA Circuit. They generally were very competitive. I liked the competition and the quality of the races that were part of the Circuit. It was great!

Q: What is your favorite part about the Circuit competition?
A: Â I enjoy the camaraderie and top competition I have found while attending CARA races. I choose to participate in the Circuit to help me achieve my goals and perform at my best. The races that are part of the circuit are well run races as well.Â

Q: What does running mean to you?
A: Running is my passion! I enjoy the feeling of freedom I get when I run. It keeps me calm and a time to be with myself. It also challenges me and allows me to get to know the strength of both my mind and body. Â
Q: Describe your most memorable Circuit race experience.
A: A memorable moment is when I completed the 2022 Chicago Marathon and realized I qualified to run Boston.
Q: What advice would you offer to a new runner or someone who wants to start running?
A: Be patient and consistent. Find someone to run with and someone who challenges you. Join a running group/club. Set goals and find races that will help you challenge yourself.
Q: Anyone you would like to thank or give kudos to that has helped you on your running journey?
A: My husband John has always supported my running. I also thank the support I get from my running club and in particular from the Fleet Feet Racing Team. I am also grateful to those who at the end of a training session or a race have words of encouragement for me.
Q: What would you say is your most successful circuit season?
A: Two years come to mind. In 2013, I achieved several PR’s, including an 18:58 minute 5K, a 1:06:33 Soldier Field 10 miler and a 1:28:52 in the Chicago Half Marathon.
In 2016, I was inducted into the CARA Hall of Fame.
Q:Â What is the hardest race you have ever run?Â
A: The Boston Marathon. The marathon is a long race and I am not used to running long races. Also in 2024 it was a very hot day to run.
Q: What is your favorite race distance?Â
A: Short distances; the 5K and the mile.
You can catch Angelica and other Circuit runners at one of the remaining races on the calendar this year. Check it at www.cararuns.org/circuit
