CARA Cares! With May being Mental Health Awareness month, CARA has launched a new webpage providing mental health resources. This page consists of many free resources available at no cost to facilitate access and awareness to crises and mental well-being help and materials.
Additionally, CARA is also bringing several organizations providing mental health services to the May ‘Go Run™ dates. Each ‘Go Run™ is a free, timed 5k and 1-mile perfect for running and walking. Exercise, an active lifestyle, and spending time in nature are not only good for your physical health, but they can reduce anxiety and depression and improve sleep.
The May 4th ‘Go Run™ in Humboldt Park saw over 200 runners register, including the CARA Racing Team and DW Running. Representatives from Humboldt Health, Breakthrough, and Back on my Feet were there to meet participants and share how they can help.
On May 11th at Big Marsh Park, Heal on Purpose was available to address the often overlooked and silenced issue of sexual trauma within the Black community.
Coming up on May 18th at the ‘Go Run™ in Horner Park, CARA will be joined by American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, PAWS Chicago, and Girls on the Run.
Finally, CARA wraps up Mental Health Awareness month at the May 25th ‘Go Run™ with Garfield Park’s own Breakthrough. Breakthrough’s services are numerous, from health & wellness, violence prevention, and youth development to economic opportunities and housing support.
Register here for a ‘Go Run™ and let’s use this time for reflection, education, and de-stigmatization to foster understanding and support for those navigating the complexities of mental health challenges. From sharing personal stories to organizing our runs around mental health awareness, we can promote empathy and resilience. It's a reminder that mental health is integral to overall well-being, deserving attention, compassion, and action year-round.
Remember, you are not alone! If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, there are resources available at no cost to find help, hope, and healing.
